Find the best baby cot for you - one that's long-lasting, secure, comfortable and easy to assemble

Getting the best cot is one of the most valuable purchases you can make for your baby. Not only does it bring them joy by providing them with their own sleeping space, but it also keeps them comfortable and, above all, safe.

Most baby cots are used from 0-6 months old. A standard cot will usually last until your child is two years old, but there are plenty that convert into toddler beds and can last right up until they are ten (with the suitable conversion kit). Some baby cots have built-in storage and others can be adjusted to different levels to keep babies safe when they’re able to move around or pull themselves up.

Also available are compact baby cots that are better suited to smaller rooms. While many parents opt for a moses basket or bedside crib for the first 4-6 months, a baby can grow out of this quite quickly. This is why more and more parents are buying cots or cot beds for their newborns to use from day one straight through to toddlerhood.

Below, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite tried-and-tested baby cots, alongside a short guide on what to look out for when shopping for the best cot for your newborn or impending arrival.

How to choose the best baby cot for you

When buying a baby cot, the main factors to consider are size, safety standards, style, and budget. Read more on these below.

What are the advantages of buying a baby cot?

A baby cot is sturdier and safer than a moses basket and some can convert into cot beds. This means you can save money by choosing one place for your baby to sleep for a longer period of time. Another advantage is that your baby can learn to sleep in one place for a longer stint of their life without being disturbed. They will be familiar with their cot and won’t need to make a transition into an alternative, alien bed. This creates a feeling of safety and relaxation for your baby, which will hopefully help them settle that little bit easier.

What size cot should I buy?

Cots are smaller than cot beds, at around 50-60cm wide, meaning they may fit in your room easier (the NHS recommends that a baby sleeps in the same room as their parents until they’re six months old). The length of a baby cot, however, can vary between 90cm to around 140cm, so if you have a nursery with limited space, you might want to opt for a cot that's shorter.

If space isn’t an issue, a longer bed will likely last the little one until they are much older and could be a cost effective solution. There is also the option to buy a bedside cot with a removable side, so it can be positioned to the side of your own bed.

What safety standards should a baby cot meet?

When it comes to cots and cot beds, there are some safety requirements to adhere to. For example, under one particular European Standard (EN 716-1:2017), the gap between the bars of the cot should not be larger than 6.5cm so your baby’s limbs can’t get stuck in between them. It’s also recommended that the distance between the top of the mattress and the top of the cot sides is at least 50cm, to prevent your baby from climbing out, while other experts recommend that a cot has bars on all four sides to help with air flow.

How do baby cots cost?

Baby cots can cost anywhere between £100 and £700, or more. For a bed with a decent size and spec, you can expect an average price of around £150-£350. Some beds come with the mattress included and though these may seem pricier at first, they work out to be more cost-effective than buying the frame and the mattress separately.

Do I need extra features?

There are a few extra features to look out for when shopping around for a good baby cot. These include things like teething rails to protect the baby’s gums and the cot itself, adjustable cot base height, and extra space for storage by way of drawers or built-in shelves. Other features include toddler bed conversion options and the choice to add a mattress with a protective cover to your order.
